SCA: Mission and Role

The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) is the world’s largest international nonprofit organization uniting everyone in the coffee industry — from farmers to baristas. Its core mission is to improve coffee quality, grow the culture of specialty coffee, and make the industry sustainable and profitable across the entire value chain.

SCA’s global coffee community

History and Founding

The SCA was formed in January 2017 following the merger of two leading organizations — the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA, 1982) and the Speciality Coffee Association of Europe (SCAE, 1998). By the time of the merger, they counted roughly 10,000 members and represented dozens of countries.

For decades, both associations developed quality standards, organized championships, and popularized the concept of coffee waves, which continue to shape the industry today.

Global Standards and Education Programs

The SCA develops and maintains key standards for evaluating green coffee, roasting, beverage preparation, and sensory analysis. If you’d like to dive deeper, check out our piece on coffee roasting.

Since 2024, the SCA has officially adopted the components of the Coffee Value Assessment (CVA) as the new cupping standards, replacing the 2004 protocol and form: Coffee Value Assessment and the SCA announcement on adopting the standards (SCA-102/103/104-2024).

In green grading, a 350 g sample uses defect counting (Cat-1/Cat-2). See details in SCA Coffee Standards.

The SCA’s education programs include the Coffee Skills Program (Introduction to Coffee, Barista Skills, Brewing, Green Coffee, Roasting, Sensory Skills): official CSP page.

World Championships

Together with World Coffee Events, the SCA curates global competitions — the World Barista Championship, World Brewers Cup, World Latte Art Championship, and more. Participation terms and requirements are set by current documents: Rules & Regulations — World Coffee Championships; current PDF for the WBC: 2025 WBC Official Rules.
