Diversity of Coffee Tree Varieties

The coffee tree boasts over 200 diverse varieties. This evergreen plant prefers a moderately humid climate and thrives in high-altitude regions. However, only two varieties are cultivated by humans: Arabica and Robusta. There are numerous variations of these varieties, especially Arabica, which varies by country of origin. Some of these arose naturally, while others were selectively bred.

Characteristics of Arabica

Arabica coffee typically grows as a tree up to 8 meters tall. Its freshly roasted coffee is known for its acidity, with fruity and floral notes and low caffeine content.

Natural Varieties of Arabica

The most common natural varieties are Typica and Bourbon. Each country where it is grown has its own specific varieties. For example:

  • Honduras: IHCafe, Maragogipe, Bourbon
  • Guatemala: Maragogipe and Anacafé 14
  • Kenya: SL28 and SL34 (selectively bred)
  • Peru: Typica

And this is just a small fraction of all existing varieties.

Why Create New Varieties?

Most new varieties are developed to combat coffee diseases, increase yield, and improve flavor profiles. There are even hybrids of Arabica and Robusta that are resistant to pests and coffee leaf rust.

Popular and Expensive Varieties

One of the most popular and expensive varieties is Geisha. It's among the most expensive coffees in the world, with prices reaching up to $800 per kilogram of green beans. This coffee is low in caffeine, which reduces bitterness, and has a very unique taste with floral and fruity notes.

Coffee Price and Varieties

The price of Arabica coffee often depends on the variety. The more expensive ones are those concentrated in specific countries, such as Blue Mountain from Jamaica.
